Shruti box just plays continuous 'chord'. I think the manual original was called a sruiti peti?
Electronic tampura imitates plucking of strings.

Yes thats right. A srut box sounds similar to Harmonium sruti bt a different tone.
An electronic tampura attempts to mimic the tampura. Of course the tone is different and you can make a similar comparision between music heard from a highly compressed digital source like mp3 and an extremely sophisticated LP record player connected to a top class valve amplifier.

The sruti box is used usually by nadhaswaram vidwans (for reasons I do not know) and also by bhajan singers. Its comparitively slightly cheaper than the electronic sruti

I noticed when I saw Nadaswaram/Thavil recently that they used a manual struti box. I am guessing: tambura would have no chance of being audible to a nadaswaram player, sruti box is simple.

Thiruvenkadu Subramania Pillai was the first vidwan to use tampura and mrudangam for his concerts
