LONDON: Six authors from around the globe, including India's Anita
Desai, were on Tuesday shortlisted for the Booker Prize, Britain's
premier literary award.

Anita Desai, shortlisted twice before, hopes to go one better this time
with Fasting, Feasting.

The biggest shock was the judges' decision to omit authors Salman
Rushdie, Vikram Seth and Roddy Doyle, who had been widely tipped
as leading contenders. Instead they opted for a wide range of styles
and authors - from England, Scotland, Ireland, Egypt, South Africa
and India.

The 21,000 pound prize, awarded every year at a glittering dinner for
the London literati, usually turns into a publishing horse race with
bookmakers eagerly quoting odds on the novel of the year.(Reuters)
