Interesting point is after going through lot of tunes MSV-KD not able to finalise best one. Coffee suggested that use 2 nd tune and 5th tune like that. Kannadasan immediately shouted at him and said "coffee kalakara mathiri illa music". but MSV took the suggestion and mixed beautifully. That's why song starts like MADHANA MALIGAI MADHAMALIGAYIL
MANTHIRA MALIGALAM MANTHIRA MAALAIGALLAM.

Saradha Madam, thanks for posting Madhana maligayil . I like this movie also especially one scene when NT hears that her sister has delivered a baby and he will show expression of happiness and will start distributing sweets.

The next moment one will say that she is dead and on the spot the expression changes dramatically! but a call comes to start the show for the day and what show ?
its that of a joker to entertain some children

Nice movie but I thought the director needlessly makes him die at the end .

It is actually a good idea for interviewing him and asking him to talk about songs - what his inspirations were etc.
And it has to be done over several hours for him to get deeper.

For instance, when I met the genius, I wanted to ask him, what his source of inspiration was for the song - 'Malar edhu en kangal than' from Avalukkendru or manam, which is
a song without a similar arrangement in TFM. You cant say what style it is.

But when I asked mentioned the name of the song, his immediate response was: "Adhuva! Adhu ilaiyaraaja enakku
vasicha paatachae". And got sidetracked.

(Raja himself has written about how he got to play
'combo' organ for this song and how he watched MSV 'dictate' whole arrangement in 40 minutes and how his
respect for MSV's talent grew manifold).

The other block is that MSV does not believe in 'analyzing'
his output. He may be more inclined to tell stories of what happened because that is what most people would want to hear about. When I wanted to talk about the Latin influence of Thaedinaen Vandadhu he got into how it was scratched and retuned and rerecorded afresh for an angry Director Sridhar. When I wanted to talk about the beautiful Aayar padi maligaiyil, he got into how the album was recorded in a day beginning with TMS singing Pullanguzhal and SPB singing Ayar padi around midnight. There are many many layers of music technique, lyrical, cultural and comic information that it is very difficult to get to one particular aspect. So it has to be a series of interviews, say 20 interviews with 2 hours each, with songs played a bit and asking him to comment and so on, the whole thing should be video recorded and patiently transcribed and edited.


In the West, scholars spend lots of time interviewing the composers and their musicians and write volumes of 'Stories behind the song' for many pop composers. MSV's output is
mind-boggling for its variety and raw inspiration. It is a good idea to plan such a project. It needs someone in madras
who is well versed in his songs. MSV himself is very very accessible. His son Gopi is very very friendly and eager to set up meeting time anytime (literally).

This is the stuff of research scholars in TFM. We are lucky he is still alive to talk but unlucky there is no one to listen and record.

What you have mentioned here is out and out acceptable one. But the unfortunate thing is, neither any of the cine personalities nor any of the TV channels (who are all possessing the facilities for that) have interested to do this.

What you told is correct. For each and every song of him has an interesting story behind it, especially how it was tuned, recorded, the quarrels between lyric writers and directors with him...... like that.

I am just a fan of MSV, I myself know hundreds of stories and incedents about the recording of the songs and what had happened during recording time.

I have already shared few of them here about some songs like:

As usual, a thalaivar song for the week end

Forming part of a fishermen community, MGR realizes that there are subgroups within a community which hampers the progress of their main livinghood , that of catching the fish and selling it. The villain Nambiar , who is very powerful and influential makes his moves to ensure that there is no unity within the fishermen community.
So Thalaivar takes up this onerous task of bringing togetherness by all ways and means. You can see him working very hard and tirelessly towards his pursuit of giving a good life for this set of people.
Inbetween , he finds some very little time to chat with his lover SarojaDevi .

So , he does not want to waste time. He runs runs and runs at high speed and finally reaches the spot where he meets SD .

And here comes ANOTHER WONDERFUL/ DELIGHTUL/ SCINTILLATING / MINDBLOWING composition

This is a brilliant song (Ulundoor pettai shanmugam once said in his interview that this song is like thirukkural 2 2 lines...and praised vaali) ..

KB was in a fix as to how to conclude the movie . Mother about to marry son and daughter likely to join hands with Father - this has created such a messy situation that even KB was puzzled it seems.
However there was the great Kavignar who gave the solution through his lyrics !

KB always insisted Kavignar that a song is needed to narrate the core theme of the movie and Kavignar always had delivered with puncy lyrics !

Vani Jayaram & Sasirekha together make this song memorable

Yes, this song belongs to the mid 70s when a young guy by name Kamal Hassan was re-introduced as a hero by KB and Kamal got a huge name . This movie played a pivotal role in elevating KH's career.

T.R.Mahalingam widely acknowledged as a high pitch singer was also equally criticised that he cannot sing a song in low pitch. So, he was very keen to disprove this notion. When Kavignar Kannadasan produced Malayitta mangai, TRM expressed his desire to sing a song in low tone.
Thus this song was used in this movie.

There is another story behind this song. Originally lyricis were written for MGR in another movie but he didnt accept the contents and hence asked Kavignar to write another song which turned out to be that melodious KAN MOODUM VELAYILUM KALAI INDHA KALAYE.

Whatever may be the history behind this song, the tune is melodious as it has Abogi content sweetly used.

When Kavignar Kannadasan was about to rush to far east for some agenda, the makers of this movie requested him to complete all the songs and he did write many songs and went in a hurry.
Before leaving, he told everyone to watch for one particular song.
Everyone broke their heads in frustration , unable to spot the song which he has highlighted.
Finally MSV identified this song's lyrics and told everyone that as the producer wanted the movie to be released by MAY, Kavignar had penned each word of this song ending with MAY :shock:

Listen to the melodious composition . A song which is all but class personified . TMS and PS at their best . Its another gem from Mellisai Mannar.
