    Hi !

    I have one doubt..

in films like "mella thiranthadhu kadhavu" and "senthamizh pattu" where the music is said to be composed by both MSV and IR....

can anybody explain how they divided their work and participation ?

I heard that in MTK the songs for Radha like "kuzhaloodhum" and "ooru sanam" are by IR and for Amala like "vaa vennila" and "thedum kaN parvai" are by MSV...

    is it true ?

[tscii:e9fe364812]MSV’s music underwent some changes in the style over a period of time ( probably the influence of men like Joseph Krishna and Henry Daniel ….MSVin valadhu karangal….Saradhajiii mentioned earlier in Mellisai Mannar thread that when everyone was moving to IR camp for their survival…. Joseph Krishna was the only one to stick on with MSV as a devoted disciple ) I think these assistants were instrumental in MSV using a lot of chorus…in some songs….

The chorus was prevalent in :

    Devanay ennai paarungal….from Nyana oli

Oru raja raniyidam….from Sivandha mann ( a favourite song of Ushaji and Saro Chechi !! )

Azagiya thamiz magal ival …from Rikshawkaaran

    Sorgam pakkathil…..from Enga maama

Malar edhu unkangal thaan endru solvenadee… a terrific number from Avalukendru oru manam ( a different MSV in this song…deserves a separate posting )

Anbu nadamaadum kalaikoodamay….from Dr. Siva ?

Ulagam…azagu kalaigalin surangam….from Ulagam suttrum vaaliban

Kaatrukenna vayleee…. From Avargal…a mild chorus type with full of swarajathi

Yaadhum ooray …yaavarum kayleer …from Ninaithaalay inikkum

One outstanding composition with terrific chorus used as an interlude which IMO…the best of the MSV hits ……. PONMAGAL VANDHAAL ..PORUL KODEE THANDHAAL….from the movie SORGAM…

The theme…….three thick friends….in pursuit of money and wealth……what challenges they come across in life…how each one counters….and finally getting adjusted to the ground realities in life…..

This movie was well known purely for this song….otherwise a pretty ordinary story and one should admit …it was not the best of the movies of Nadigar thilagam

But the song…. Ponmagal vandhaal….. will last forever…..

The song will just take off like at lightening speed…and will move even faster at a rapid pace….with tablas thundering with drums and heavy chorus interludes….I think MSV experimented with Chorus as a substitute for Violin interludes…and they came out terrifically ….

The picturisation will be quite interesting ….with big big golden coins everywhere and Shivaji dancing with Vijaya nirmala ???? for a dream song…..Shivaji…well dressed up like an emperor and his movements will be very sharp…..

Some of the words are still fresh in memory :

    Thirumagal sammadham…tharugiraal ennidam….. manadhilay nimmadhi…malarvadho punnagai…..

Selvathin anaipil kidappen…. Velvettin midhappil iruppen…raaajanaaaga……..

    Vairamo envasam….vaazvilay paravasam…veedhiyil oorvalam….viziyellam navarasam…….

The whole song will just focus on money, money and wealth……
The greatness of this song lies in the manner …MSV used the chorus background with little violin support…..while the drums ( even the great Sivamani was with MSV for sometime ) bangoos and the tabla …..at their best….

TMS …….Oru thanithanmayudan paaduvaar……….bramikka vaikkum sangadhi…..will go high and low pitch quite casually….

Needless to mention…this song was heard in light music programmes for long in the 70s….not sure whether appears now a days….

For the true fans of Mellisai Mannar…..this song will always be in their memory…..

Even today…if you ask someone who is in the 50s about this movie Sorgam…they will immediately tell you about this song.. Pon magal vandhaal only….such was the impact of this scintillating composition of MSV…

    Ninaithaalay Inikkum....

[tscii:e7d450e6fd]Probably KB thought that he should honour the legend MSV and made this movie…. NINAITHAALAY INIKKUM…..

And…. Mellisai Mannar did not disappoint…..

Released in the end 70s ….this movie is associated with the school …college days of guys like me with the age group ranging between 40 and 45 )

Whenever our friends meet once in a way…we immediately recollect this movie….as it was for college goers…….just go …sit….enjoy the songs….lovely picturisation….

For Kamal and Rajini…they both have shared some wonderful moments and fond memories in some programmes about this movie…

Kamal once mentioned that he and Rajini….( they were in just late 20s ) they were going together everywhere enjoying the beauty of Singapore and Malaysia….whenever they wanted to sleep…they will sit sliding upon the back of each other…and pretend as if they are chatting with each other ( this is to deceive KB ) ..actually they will be sleeping !!

One can also see both Kamal and Rajini at the prime of their youth…. Rajini will be in french beard…to add fun….

Even at the evening of his glorious musical career , MSV could still bring his old magic by composing some everlasting melodies……

    1. Engeyum eppodhum…

Terrific start to the movie…studded with leadguitar, drums, trumphet and what not……. Kamal dancing and singing…in his customary style….This is another light music song…..heard for a long time…And it’s a SPB special….. when he sings… Maalai newyorkil …kaabarayyyyyy…..

    2. Namma ooru singaaree

This is a Rajini / SPB special….. known for the rhythm….picturisation will be so funny…. At one stage KB will show Rajini getting swayed by the song…and will stop giving mouth expression and will react late…before coming back to normalcy…a pleasant surprise from KB ! One can also see a very young charming Geetha !

    3. Aanandha thaandavamo

    A typical LRE song….for Jayapradha….in the streets of Singapore…. A slow number ….. appadiyay sokka vaikkum……

    4. Barathi kannamaa

IMO…..the best song ….as it has tons and tons of melody …….SPB and VJ……appapaa….what a great variety they will exhibit ….great improvisation in this song….( this song deserves a separate posting )…
Kamal and JP singing in Malaysia with a nice garden ..picturesque background

( the same background can be seen Yeh….. paadal ondru…in Priyaaa )…I think both the movies were shot at the same time ?

    5. Yaadhum ooray yaavarum kayleer

A group song….with the entire Kamal group singing and enjoying seeing the Singapore city…trumphet will be extensively used here…. Along with jalatharangam….

    6. Sambo siva sambo

From MSV !! for Rajini…… a full fledged entertainer !! with the lyrics will be all fun…..( this song will be used as a stop gap arrangement by Rajini as Kamal would have gone in search of JP ! ). Rajini will look quite funny with a head band !..
Quite frequently he will also say…Sivasambo…in the movie…

    7. Sayonaraaa vesham kalaindhadhu….

I wish MSV could have avoided this composition… as it resembled Milgaya…from Hum kiseesay kum naheen……Still it was popular…

    8. Inimai niraindha ulagam irukku…

LRE and SPB for Kamal and JP…and this is the final song….the last stages of JP …suffereing from acute cancer but wants to enjoy her life to the brink..and Kamal acceding to her request …..a lovely end song with nice rhythm……indha sogamaana padathirku…indha paadal oru aarudhalaaga irukkum….appadi oru composition….MSV will make us cheerful….

    There are 2 more songs…. Nizal kandavan naanugiren…… and What a waiting……
    Nice numbers…..

One could see the best days of SPB, ....in this movie….ofcourse VJ , PS and LRE also had a song each but this movie reserves a special place for SPB …..and it’s a SPB dominated movie…..

The voice modulation that SPB adopts for Kamal and Rajini will be terrific….

    MSVyin maaperum isai payanathil…indha padam oru…mayil kal……

I wish KB should have made the image of MSV prominent along with Kamal and Rajini ( as some guys adopted for IR in the 80s ) as MSV richly deserved a place in the poster and the hoardings….

At the time of release …..the posters carried the words…. IDHU ORU INNISAI MAZAI…….[/tscii:e7d450e6fd]

Balaji: Thanks for reminding me of the unforgettable old times. You missed out a couple of numbers :
Ninaithale Ininkkum (Hummimg by SP, SJ)
Vaanile (sounds similar to Sayanora but afster)
You are like a fountain (SP)
One more where Rajini ties someone froma fan etc.
Also, "Oru Mutthaarathil" by PS is another excelelnt song from Sorgam.

[tscii:d06e1ece0d]The magnificient Mellisai Mannargal – MSV and TKR….most of their composition are evergreen hits….and are being heard even after 45 - 50 years !

Amazing is the longevity of their compositions….

Even while most of IR’s wonderful hits of 70s and 80s are forgotten ……. the duo’s songs are still being heard at large….One reason could be the beautiful , poetic , melody that they chose as their core strength….and the striking lyrics

VENNIRA AADAI…….. a movie…..WILL COME UNDER TOP 25 ( its very difficult to chose the best of the lot when it’s a case of MSV TKR combo )..

This movie has SOME OF THE BEST OF THE MOST MEMORABLE HITS OF THE FAMOUS DUO… and they look fresh….and new……

The song composition for this movie …we could see a DIFFERENT STYLE …WITH THEIR CUSTOMARY MELODY… INTACT…
One can hear EXTENSIVE USAGE OF WESTERN INSTRUMENTS …GUITAR ( rhythm, lead and bass ) , PIANO, DRUMS

JJ’s first movie …..had other new faces also….Srikanth was the hero…. Murthy and Nirmala were also introduced….but strangely the nick name Vennira aadai got attached to Murthy and Nirmala but not for the lead pair !! These are some of the mysteries of Tamil film industry….

Directed by the great Sridhar…. …

The movie commences with the lovely song CHITIRAMAY NILLADEE …MUTHAMITAAL ENADEE..…. simple but lovely number….PBS and SJ for Srikanth and Nirmala ….nice picturisation ..indoor…in a small garden area…. The pair quite well dressed up…It’s a nice start to a movie….to see this beautiful song….the speciality of this number is…very little instruments but the impact will be terrific….

YENNA YENNA VAARTHAIGALO…..for JJ ..PS again….a fantastic interludes..extensive usage of PIANO….and the sweet voice of PS as support….there will be a virtual competition between piano and PS….Nilavay…unnai ariven….angay..melay oru naal varuven……malarndhaal angu malarven..illai pani pol naanum maraiven….
Those who had listened to the above words….will appreciate the true class of PS ….
Its an indoor song with JJ gracefully singing after she comes out of her insanity…and Srikanth playing the piano…..watched by Major and others….

NEERAADUM KANGAL INGAY….Another melody from PS….

Nee enbadhenna ….LRE ..for a change..a typical LRE song …..( but not great compared to the other beautiful songs )

AMMAMAA KAATRU VANDHU AADAI THOTTU PAADUM….. An unbeatable solo by PS… Veenai Gayathri once mentioned that she loves this song so much as he used to practice regularly for the Gamakam and the sangadhi that the duo added to this magnificient number… PS will be tested totally in this song as the duo’s penchant for adding gamakam was at its best ….this is the only song which they used traditional instruments like flute, tabla and violin and sitar….

Its difficult to pick which is the best number but ……

KANNAN ENNUM MANNAN PERAI SOLLA SOLLA – for JJ …PS … what a lovely melody..a fast paced song !….The interludes will be scintillating with extensive use of Piano, guitar and drums….. the song will briefly take us outdoor .. probably Kodaikanal garden area ….very picturesque and beautiful surroundings……( before BR …it was Sridhar who brought the beauty of nature into Tamil cinema industry ) ……JJ expressing her love for Srikanth….The combination of flute, piano and guitar …the duo’s imaginative skills were brought….

If they had more exposure to western instruments and western media like today, WE WOULD HAVE WITNESSED MORE SPLENDID COMPOSITIONS

ORUVAN KADHALAN . different number. PS will change the tone when she go for high pitch. nice orchestra.

very difficult to imagine kind of orchestra they used in 60's. Not only this movie you can see the different style in karnan/Ayrathil oruvan/Pudhiya paravai. MSV proved a point again when he got separated from TKR with same style in KALANGARI VILLAKAM/ANBEVAA/UTTIVARAI ORAVU Etc.

we still feels MSV is best because his composistion able to withstand whatever changes happened in cine industry in terms of technology/taste/orchestra/invasion of western style/illayaraja/AR etc.

Balaji: We will be delighted if you would have elaborated little bit on orchestra side(normally what use to do for IR songs  ) Not fair.

Unmai unmai 100 % unmai.... in Karnan...full of Hindusthani music with a carnatic flavour...even the instruments also....
MSV is a true genius and legend....

Ramesh Bhaiyaa.... IR's interludes are still fresh in my memory and thats why I could elaborate
Unfortunately I am overseas now...else..would have listened to the songs of MSV again and would have made an analytical posting. ops:

Ok...why dont you do it now for us
especially the extensive usage of Piano and Organ in Vennira aadai...
