Thread: MELLISAI MANNAR MSV - THE SENIOR MAESTRO WITH EVERLASTING TF

  1. #251
    alaji,

Yes, policekaran magal is among VR's top albums but according to me most of their albums are great. Very few of their songs are forgotten today unlike many others who came later.

I give below some vr albums: puthayal, paathakaanikkai. paalum pazhamum. paava mannippu, paar magale paar, puthiya paravai, vaazhkai padgu, paasa malar, veenira aadai, sumaithangi, kaathiruntha kangal, hello mr zamindar, mannthi mannan, kalaikkoil, policekaran magal, nenjil ore aalayam, nenjam arappathillai, aandavan kattalai, baagappirivinal, paarthal pasi theerum, kaathilikka neramillai, aayirathil oruvan, panathottam, anam padaithavan, panakkara kudumbam, nichaya thambulam, alayamani, ithayithil nee, en kadamai, deivathai, kai kodutha deivam, server sundaram (I am forgetting the names of the films containing the songs ..intha thinnai pechu veeraridam oru kannaga irukkaranam annachi) and udalukku uyir kaaval (two of their very best).

Is it possible to single out any of the above as amongst their very best? No chance!

Ramaswamy: You missed out Karnan, in my opinion, their best.

    Yes,

My apologies for missing out Karnan. How did it happen? It's one of the very best of tfm albums. If a national award had been in vogue when the movie was released (it was not there) Karnan would surely have been in the running.

The point I am trying to make is that most of VR's albums are classics. I remember a q-a given by arasu in kumudam when its editor sap was alive in which a q was asked abt vr and the answer given was that vr as a combo was on a higher plane than either msv or ir separately or in combo. the duo of vr gelled so beautifully that we, to this day, are able to listen and appreciate their superb renderings.

Not enough. PADAGOTI/PACHAI VILAKU/PAARMAGALE PAAR/PERIYA IDATHU PENN etc. Difficult to single out particular one is best.
I think after separation MSV adopted different style. i.e very difficult
for a stranger to believe that MSV was part of VR combo.

Unanswerable question is why they parted & Why TKR not able to maintain the same tempo. Very strange.

Ramesh: You have raised interesting questions. There is an extensive discussion of the MSV-TKR split in one of the MSV threads, enough to suggest that TKR had a much more important role (if not an almost exclusive role as claimed by some there) in the VR compositions than is popularly believed. That might also explain the change in tone of MSV's music after the split. However, why TKR could not make it big alone?? May be he did not have the drive and desire of MSV. Nevertheless, it is to MSV's credit that he came up with some outstanding compositions even long after the split.

Nenjil oru aalayam - Another jewel for MSV-TKR combo

    [tscii:ae1790ccf0]NINAIPATHELLAM….. NADANDHU VITAAL, DEIVAM EDHUMILLAI,
    NADANDHADHAIYE…. NINAITHIRUNDHAAL, AMAIDHI ENDRUM ILLAI

What a mind blowing lyrics ! Sridhar wouldn’t have got a better wording than this to express the thoughts of a fully convinced Muthuraman on overhearing the exchanges between Kalyankumar & Devika from a Classic – NENJIL ORU AALAYAM.

KK, a Cardiac specialist , runs a hospital , who gets into a strange situation wherein he had to take in a dying patient Muthu but gets a shock of his life as he finds his erstwhile lover Devika along with Muthu & realizes that she is none other Muthu’s wife & feels heartbroken.

For various reasons, they couldn’t marry & part ways with bitter memories.

While Devika marries Muthu……KK is left isolated but continues his Doctor profession mechanically, unable to forget the memories of his earlier love ( even while getting frequently persuaded by his mother to marry )

But when KK finds his dearest lover Devika in a pitiable condition ,he feels crestfallen (upon scanning Muthu, he discovers that his life is in danger – Acute Cancer & those days, Cancer & TB were 2 diseases considered in Cinema industry as dreaded ones which have no solution )
Frequent attemps by KK to meet Devika in private , within the hospital fails but one night , somehow , he manages to meet her & exchanges his agony, that of his failed love life & expresses his concern about Muthu’s health & also feels sorry for Devika.
But much to his surprise, he finds Devika very stubborn & totally changed ……
The old lover Devika was nowhere found in her…..
Devika , through her body language , clearly conveys a striking message –that she is a devoted wife of Muthu now & she gives a clear message to KK that their old love life is dead long back & now she is a wife of another person & for her Muthu is everything in life & there is no life for without him !
Devika goes one step further & advises KK to forget all their past life & think about a better future as both have challenges in life to face !
KK admiring Devika’s qualities, gets back to his room absolutely satisfied .

All the above exchanges between the 2 were being overheard by Muthu ( not intentionally or with any suspicion but when he gets out of his bed to ease himself, he comes across 2 persons talking to each other & realizes that they are Devika & KK. Curious to know what they are talking, he was forced to overhear the entire conversation).

Here one should observe the reaction of Muthu while listening to every word of Devika . Sridhar is an incomparable Director ! He swiftly shows all 3 key characters in tandem & their minute facial reaction sequentially! Muthu’s admiration towards Devika will manifold as he is also stunned by the great admirable qualities of Devika as a devoted wife, having fully forgotten her past & praying for her dear hubby to get cured ……

So , when Devika casually gets back to see Muthu, he starts singing this wonderful situation song !

NINAIPATHELLAM , NADANDHU VITAAL, DEIVAM EDHUMILLAI
NADANDHADHAYE NINIATHIRUNDHAAL, AMAIDHI ENDRUM ILLAI !

Its once again the splendid combination – KAVIGNAR , MSV/TKR , PBS & SridharI have specifically slotted Kavignar first as FULL CREDIT GOES TO HIM ONLY

    MUDINDHA KADHAI THODARVADHILLAI, IRAIVAN ETTINILAY
    NADANTHA KADHAI MUDIVADHILLAI, MANIDHAN VRETINILAY

Terrific screen play here ! Sridhar , through the golden lyrics of Kavignar, makes Muthu himself comfort Devika INDIRECTLY !

AAYIRAM VAASAL IDAYAM , ADHIL AAYIRAM ENNANGAL UDAYAM
YAARO VARUVAAR, YAARO IRUPAAR, VARUVADHOM POVADHUM THERIYAADHU

    ORUVAR MATTUM KUDIYIRUNDHAAL, THUNBAM EDHUMILLAI…….
ONDRIRUKKA, ONDRU VANDHAAL, ENDRUM AMAIDHI ILLAI !

ENGAY VAAZKAI THODANGUM….ADHU ENGAY EVVIDHAM MUDIYUM
IDHU DHAAN PAADHAI ….IDHU DHAAN PAYANAM ENBADHU YAARUKKUM THERIYAADHU

PADHAI ELLAM MAARI VARUM ….PAYANAM MUDINDHU VIDUM…
    MAARUVADHAI PURINDHU KONDAAAL…MAYAKKAM THELINDHU VIDUM

The entire movie is summarized just through this song !

All through the song, while Devika gives a worried look , Muthu will be kind & gentle expressing solidarity towards his devoted wife & tries to comfort her

By this time, the duo MSV-TKR have become very seasoned - & the preludes says that – With mild guitar chords & a combination of violin , flute & accordion ( accordion gives a very sharp finishing touch to the prelude ) & a small pause……..

Ninaipadhellam , nadandhu vitaal !!! – PBS , his sweet voice adds melody
PBS is all class personified here as he gives thrust to every word…..
    Ninapadhellam….
    Nadandhuvitaal
Deivam ( from the bottom of his stomach ) Edhumillai

MSV steps in here with his customary improvisation ! Makes PBS sing the pallavi again with fine tunings by adding more sangadhi !!

The duo’s experience pervades during the interludes as well – a sober flute & violin were the only ones used to convey the mood of Muthuraman & the agony in Devika

At the end of every sentence, accordion was used to fill the gap & the filling up will be quite sharp & during both charanams, a mild rhythm guitar provides a warm subtle support

PBS , who is being ranked highly by MSV ( Avar oru Sagaaptham , an emotional MSV reacted once ! Avar paadiya paatil varum melody ellam avarudayadhu ) proves his class in this song by adding sangathi at regular intervals & also by repeating certain words

Its not easy to make audience sit & watch a movie filled with so much trauma & agony ….. Sridhar realizes this & uses Nagesh at regular intervals & such scenes with Kutty Padmini & Nagesh with the patients come as a welcome relief to the otherwise very gripping movie

Muthu does his part extremely well – he persuades both KK & Devika to marry in case he doesn’t survive the operation – Kavignar was present on dot !A stunned Devika reacts by saying SONNADHU NEE DHAANAA …..SOL SOL ENNUYIRE !! one of the evergreen classics of PS… Another fascinating aspect of this song – the composing style resembles that of HINDUSTANI – even the deft usage of Sitar , the tabla , Sarod etc !!

The unforgettable words during this song are – DEIVATHIN MAARBIL SOODIYA MAALAI THERUVINILE VIZALAAMA ?
THERUVINILAY VIZUNDHALUM ….VER OR KAI PADALAAMA ?

ORU KODIYIL ORU MURAI THAAN MALARUM MALAR ALLAVAA
ORU MANADHIL ORU MURAI THAAN VALARUM URAVALLAVAA ?

Looooong before the above scenes & mind blowing songs , Sridhar first makes KK express his agony upon meeting his erstwhile lover Devika – ENGIRUNDHALUM VAAZGA ! Today A.L.Raghavan is recognized purely for this evergreen hit !
That Owl sound to give the night effect is another nice insertion by the duo & the BGM - a befitting response to the mood of the song !

And just read the presence of mind of Kavignar here also ! KK , with tears , crestfallen, heartburn & also upon realizing that Muthu’s life is in danger comes up with his thoughts:

    ENGIRUNDHALUM VAAZGA
UN IDHAYAM AMAIDHIYIL VAAZGA ….MANJAL VALATHUDAN VAAZGA….UN MANGALA KUNGUMAM VAAZGA !

KK is very sincere that he wishes Muthu gets a new lease of life & prays for a looong inseparable innings for Devika with Muthu :

VARUVAI ENA NAAN THANIMAYIL NINDREN…..VANDHADHUM VANDHAAI THUNAIYUDAN VANDHAAI
THUNAIVARAI KAAKUM KADAMAYUM THANDHAAI….THOOYAVALE NEE VAAZGA !!!

KK gets very sentimental in the next para :

ETRIYA DHEEPAM NILAI PERA VENDUM….IRUNDA VEETIL OLI THARA VENDUM
POTRUM KANAVAN UYIR PERA VENDUM …PONMGALE NEEN VAAZGA !!

Can you get better lyrics from any one like Kavignar’s ?

KAVIGNAR ECHOES THE EMOTIONAL FEELINGS OF A TRUE LOVER WHO WISHES ALL THE BEST FOR HIS ERSTWHILE LOVER

IMO, this movie should be ranked amongst one of the best of Kavignar’s

Sridhar creates further chaos amongst the audience by making Kutty Padmini character die later – this compounds Devika’s worries further . At one point, she questions the sincerety of KK & chides him point blank – Neenga ennudaya kanavarin uyirai kaappatruveergal endru enna nichayam ? How sincere you will be ? This makes KK stunned & he gets more firm in his resolve – to make all out efforts to cure Muthu
Finally, KK completes the operation successfully but unfortunately dies due to the excessive stress that he had to undergo to master the operation

All the 3 songs abovementioned are situation based & I am forced to cover all but since Sonnadhu needhaana was beautifully covered by Saradhajee earlier, I restrict myself to other songs …( but I am stunned by the way the song was triggered from Kavignar ! )

3 more nice ones are left out :

    a. Muthana muthallavo – PS solo – Devika , on the occasion of Kutty Padmini’s birthday
    b. Enna ninathu ennai azaithayo – just before climax, Muthu asking Devika to appear in wedding dress ( a sort of melodrama )
    c. Oruvar vaazum aalayam – TMS !! – LRE , Muthu, Devika & other hospital members singing in praise of KK before his statue in the final stages

Now , you all will realize the splendid manner in which Mellisai Mannar & TKR had composed tunes & the BGM for this movie ! each song has a mild pathos effect & will be very sober – apt to the storyline warranted …..Given the parameters , the duo did a wonderful job , matching with the expectations of Sridhar

IMO, this movie should be placed amongst one of the classics of tamil cinema

    It’s a black & white movie

Another interesting aspect – except one scene , rest were all taken indoors ! a hospital environment !! Sridhar, someone who was more popular for having taken movies outdoor, proved his critics wrong by making a movie like this virtually indoors !

The magnificent story & screen play made Kannada industry to remake this & you know who played the KK role ? our dear dear Super Star !!!! & it was dubbed in tamil later as Kurinji malar . Unfortunately, this didn’t do well in box office . I think this ran for just a week in Chennai . Rajini did extremely well playing the Doctor character to nicety but he was destined to be a action hero no ?!

Today , we all know how a KB / BR / MR movie will be like but You can never classify Sridhar as a particular mould . Muthirai kutha mudiyaadha oru maaperum pudhumai iyakunar , the great Sridhar !

Look at the type of movies that he had given us:

    1. Kalayana parisu – Failed love
    2. Kadhalikka nerammillai – One of the top 10 comedy movies
    3. Sumai thaangi – Challenges being faced by a young guy
    4. Ooty varai uravu- Nadigar thilagam , in lighter vein , hilarious comedy
    5. Nenjirukkum varai – 3 angled love , established stars sans makeup !
    6. Nenjam marappadhillai – Story of erstwhile lovers joining hands in their next birth
    7. Shanti nilayam – a middle aged man , bringing up a large family of children
    8. Sivandha mann – Group of youngsters revolting against anarchy
    9. Policekaran magal – life of a policeman & his failure on a personal front
    10. Then nilavu – The title says it all !
    11. Kalai kovil – a musical experiment
    12. Meenda sorgam – Story of a barathanatyam exponent
    13. Maniyosai – story of a handicapped person

Pure surival compulsions must have forced Sridhar to make movies like Urimai Kural, Meenava nanban

In the late 70s , Sridhar was still around – Ilamai Oonjaladugiradhu , Azage unnai aaradhikiren & in the 80s – Ninaivellam nitya , Thendrale ennai thodu

Finally Sridhar also introduced Vikram - Thandhu vitten ennai – a nice simple movie but was a flop .

Sridhar is always being looked upon as a trend setter . Even today, every movie of his is being watched with awe for the wonderful storyline, terrific screen play, ahead of times camera work , outstanding songs ……………..etc etc etc…….

Sridhar - MSV-TKR combo had given some time immemorial hits & IMHO, Nenjil Oru Aalayam forms a eternal part of this combo's evergreen hits !

[tscii:01f2d1b177]That Owl sound to give the night effect is another nice insertion by the duo & the BGM - a befitting response to the mood of the song !

We are discussing preludes of MSV in other thread. one more example of outstanding composistion from the master.
Song starts with mild prelude to match scene requirement,
like silence of hospital /rainy night. MSV used even frog sound to start with and followed customary instruments.

SONNADHU NEE DHAANAA …..SOL SOL ENNUYIRE !! one of the evergreen classics of PS… Another fascinating aspect of this song – the composing style resembles that of HINDUSTANI – even the deft usage of Sitar , the tabla , Sarod etc !!

Song starts very slowly and will become fast when THIVATHIN MARBIL as emotion from character reaches peak.

Feel the delicacy INNORU KAIGALEYLEE YAAR NAANA, where master supports with Tabla and sitar effectively .Here MSV showed his class and brilliance ENN ENN ENN UYRIAE. followed by ENNN ENNN ENN UYIRE . where DEVIKA character not only asking question by PLEADING Muthurman. MSV made this point with his slight improvisation.High point is song will end with INNORU KAIGALALILAY (abnormal end) but you can find that only in movie as usual got edited in normal track.

From the list you can find only couple of movies scored by other MD's ( I think that too AM Raja)rest of them are taken care by MSV.
Not only MSV-TKR combo even after separation MSV maintained his touch with OOTI VARIA URAVU/AVALKU ENDRU MANAM/SIVANTHA MANN etc. All these movies are known not only super hits songs but with lot of vairieties in each songs. MSV not only made wonderful job but made the scenes as UNFORGETABLE ONE with his splendid creativity.

    regards

MGR-KAVIGNAR-MSV in Nadodee another splendid album

    [tscii:8423099df4]
Puratchi Thalaivar - Kavignar , both in reel as well as real life had had vibrant streaks of friendship and occasional spats as well. Still both, each gifted with strong individuality, understood , recognized and respected each one’s talent.

I believe , for 2 situational songs in Aayirathil Oruvan , MG , after not being satisfied with lyrics from others including Valee, finally had to call Kavignar ( despite the rift ) & Kavignar, the true artist that he was, also obliged with Adho Andha paravai pola & Odum megangale !

Amongst the MG-Kavignar combo , I am captivated to NAADU ADHAI NAADU - Nadoee………..

MG lip-synchs this song like a typical Nadodee with harmonium hanging around his neck .This is another movie sans any political message or any hidden agenda but a pure commercial movie with a simple love story …

Saroja devi first paired with MGR in NADODEE MANNAN ……..

This pair had acted 26 movies !

Coincidentally the same pair also appeared later in NADODEE

    Released in 1966

However, the movie starts with Barathi as the first lover but dies earlier

MGR , being deprived of his ancestors’ wealth by VKR wanders around in streets , comes across a blind SD , whose eyes gets impaired in an accident….. Pitied by her condition, MGR takes care of her. In due course, they understand each other & the resultant love makes MG resolve to restore her eyes by singing songs, collects money in small small lots & finally achieves his mission ! Though Nambiar was just a fill up to complete the cast for Villain& also plays the intermediary who helps in arranging for the eye operation , the focus remains on the eye restoration only ….Infact, MG himself occasionally jokes at SD & takes care of the comical part also

One such day when the pair goes to streets singing songs in pursuit of collecting money to achieve their objective , this song appears …..

The usage of NAADU both as a noun & verb shows Kavignar’s gifted ability …He actually plays with the word ‘Naadu’ & indeed its a real beauty.

Another interesting aspect of this song is the peculiar lyrics makes me wonder if this could be Makkal thilagam sang for Tamil Eelam way back in the 60s – NAADU ADHAI NAADU …..ADHAI NAADAVITAAL EDHU VEEDU. Though the movement was not that active in the 60s , IMO, this song has unequal merits as the pledge song for Eelam.

Reading the lyrics, this song should be a huge motivational factor for those ardent supporters of free land & freedom for them, it’s a true reflection of what they aspire for & what they strive for ….this may fit for even Palestine & Israel !! ….

Though other lyricists also gave sold songs for MG to spread his political / ethical / cultural messages , beyond doubt , some songs of Kavignar had that extraordinary ‘punch’ in his lines

In the mid 1960s, long before the struggle for Eelam was in the thoughts of Sri Lankan Tamils, Kavignar-MG must have thought about it & aptly named the movie title itself & gave a thought provoking song ….

& the movie name as well - Nadodee (The Vagabond). Kavignar’s poignant song starts with the lines:

    NAADU…ADHAI NAADU….ADHAI NAADAAVITAAL…EDHU VEEDU
    VAAZUM POZHUDHELLAM ADHAIYE PAADU
    VAANAM PERIDHENDRU VAAZUM PANN PAADU

In a play on the word Naadu, which means ‘homeland’ (as a noun) and ‘reach your target ’ (as a verb), Kavignar splendidly highlights the wisdom that one’s real home is in his/her homeland. Also, nicely uses the word PANPAADU & PANN-PAADU !!

Even when I hum the lines of this particular lyric, I’m astounded by Kavignar’s mastery of thoughts, words and vision, and he writes these lines for Makkal thilagam to mouth these lines through the golden voice of TMS & very well supported by PS .

    Paalaivanam enra pothum Nam Naadu
Paarai Malai kooda Nam ellai Kodu
    Aaru Nilam Paainthu Vizhaiyadum Thottam
    Veera Samuthayame Engal Kootam.
The lyrics are too striking …. that even if a dry desert happens to be our our homel, its our dear homeland & lets have borders with rock and mountains. There are rivers which flow into the fields, and lets be proud of our heroic traditions.

What follows during the final charanam are real gems :

    Pasi enru Varuvoorku Virunthaha Maarum
    Pahaivar Muham Paarthu Puliyaaha Cheerum
    Nilathil Uyir Vaithu Urimai Kondaadum
    Ethirthu Varuvorai Urama Podum
    .

Kavignar signs off with - We will provide food for those who come with hunger….. to our adversaries, we turn into tigers…. We will cherish our dear land & will make our enemies as fertilizers for our land

The situation & composition must have been cake walk for Mellisai Mannar as he had the FREEDOM TO USE HIS PET HARMONIUM !! with a flourish, MSV applies harmonium very sharply as preludes ……

And the tune & lyrics must have impressed MG a lot it seems…..as he acknowledges with AHAA for which SD also reciprocates with OHO when her turn comes !

And its harmonium everywhere during the interludes ….midway, one can hear some trumphets / military type drums but somehow the harmonium seamlessly merges with the song & resurfaces at regular intervals….One can also hear lovely usage of tabla to give speed & momentum …..

MG, the ever cheerful character, will be at his usual self to convey a very motivational song to enthuse patriotism…..However, as he was tied to the harmonium, MG couldn’t extend / stretch his hands left & right ( his usual style was curbed !!) ….Still, never short of enthusiasm, he runs around playing with ease, the harmonium …..I feel that SD was a bit over playing her reactions when she reacts for Vetri thirumaadhu nadai podum ellai !

I will be a sinner if I miss out TMS …….the one and only TMS can bring such power & force …..such a thundering impact …….The thrust he gives to every word & the subtle variation for Paadum pozudhellam adhaiye paadu…..

The eagerness & anxiety of someone longing for a land is reflected when he touches …… Adhai naadaavitaal edhu veedu
Or for ……Vaanam peridhendru vaazum …….

Displays bravery & valour when he sings – Veerar vizi thaanzdhu nilam paarpathillai

& the fondness for one’s land is reflected when he sings – Paalai vanam endra podhum nam naadu …..

Only TMS can give such a thrust ….a committed & involved singer !

I believe TMS was not even asked to speak during the recent NT statue unveiling ceremony ….which IMO is an insult to one of the greatest assets of Tamil cinema……If at all, someone deserves to talk about Shivaji , it should be TMS first & then only others…..No, not even Karunanidhi or the next generation Rajini / Kamal / Vijay kanth …. Really disgusting to hear such igronance being displayed time & again on the great artists of yesteryears

This movie is another wonderful album for the Melody king .. combo with MGR :
    a. Androru naal idhe nilavil avan irundhaan – Another streetside song by TMS & PS – a poetic song …lovely lyrics
    b. Ulagamengum ore mozhi – TMS & PS ….. a unique composition , western type , one of my MSV all time favourites
    c. Thirumbi vaa oliye thirumbi vaa – TMS & PS again …..Looks like another composition wherein the tune came first followed by lyrics !

Each one was a super hit & being heard even today with the same enthu & interest because the silken melody effect has been coated on them !

Despite their differences, it was MG who recognized Kavignar by giving him the honour of ARASAVAI KAVIGNAR post when he assumed office as CM in 1977……….This shows what a true great personality MGR was , forgetting & forgiving the past & looking forward to renewing the relationships with friends & foes ………….

[tscii:b026486f95] Ulagamengum ore mozhi – TMS & PS ….. a unique composition , western type , one of my MSV all time favourites

    Balaji

wonderful writing. Doordarshan use to telecast this song (NAADU)quiet often in Oliyum/Olliym.

Yesterday only I saw this song in Raj TV. Ulagamengum ore mozhi .
After hearing Mellisai Mannar music my imagination was something different but they did it like ordinary song.

Yes. nice incidence when MGR asked KD to write for AATHOO ANTHA PARAVAI song. MGR accepted the lyrics immediately without any hesistation. While replying to the question KD remarked I gave opportunity to MGR to show his style by writing AATHOO ANTHA PARVAI POLA VAZHA VENDUM/ETHO INTHA ALAIGAL POLA AADAVENDU . That means MGR can use his normal style (moving his hand upand down).Funny reply from KD.
